Terms and rules

General

All content you submit, upload, or otherwise make available to the Service ("Content") may be reviewed by staff members. All Content you submit or upload may be sent to third-party verification services (including, but not limited to, spam prevention services). Do not submit any Content that you consider to be private or confidential.

You agree to not use the Service to submit or link to any Content which is defamatory, abusive, hateful, threatening, spam or spam-like, likely to offend, contains adult or objectionable content, contains personal information of others, risks copyright infringement, encourages unlawful activity, or otherwise violates any laws. You are entirely responsible for the content of, and any harm resulting from, that Content or your conduct.

We may remove or modify any Content submitted at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice. Requests for Content to be removed or modified will be undertaken only at our discretion. We may terminate your access to all or any part of the Service at any time, with or without cause, with or without notice.

By submitting content to this website, you are granting Astro What? a royalty-free, perpetual, irrevocable, non-exclusive right (including any moral rights) and license to use, license, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, derive revenue or other remuneration from, communicate to the public, perform and display the content (in whole or in part) worldwide and/or to incorporate it in other works in any form, media, or technology now known or later developed.
You retain copyright over the Content.

These terms may be changed at any time without notice. If they are changed, and you decide that you cannot agree to them, feel free to contact us and we will gladly disable your account, removing all pertinent personal information from you account.

Language and conduct

  1. Do not use obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, or excessively violent language.
  2. Do not harass, insult, taunt, provoke, demean, or personally attack other forum members.
  3. Be friendly even if others are not.
  4. Do not excessively "bump" a thread (post simply to get a thread to the top of the list).
  5. Do not post copyrighted material unless you own the copyright.
  6. Link to content rather than posting it in its entirety, unless you are the copyright holder or have permission from the copyright holder.
  7. Don't post any sensitive information. Moderators will remove personal information from posts (when found or reported) to protect your privacy. Ultimately control of your personal information is yours. Simply don't post it in public settings.
  8. Post a descriptive topic name! Don’t use attention getting subjects. They don’t get attention and only annoy people.
  9. Please refrain from posting the same question in several forums. There is normally one forum which is most suitable in which to post your question.
  10. When posting, please use proper grammar. Refrain from 'text-message' style substitutions of words like 'u' for 'you', and 'ur' for 'your'. This is a multi-national forum, and some of our non-english speaking members must use translation software which is confused by abbreviations. Most of our volunteer members are very busy helping as many people as they can, and a post that is hard to read will often be overlooked.
  11. Linking to hate, anti-Semitic, racist, pornography, warez or other illegal sites is not permitted and will result in possible bans.

Account Deletion

You may contact staff and request your account to be deleted. You will have a 3 day "cooling off" period before any action is taken. Your account will NOT be deleted, but your account information will be removed and all posts you have created with then be associated with a different name.

If you have posted personal information anywhere on the site, you need to specifically ask for it to be removed. We will not search through the site to find such information as once you post it, it is then public information.
That is why we have rule #7 in place.

Once your account is deleted, it cannot be recovered as this is a non-reversible action. That is why there is a 3 day cool-off period set.

Avatars & Signatures

Avatars must be in good taste. This means no vulgar or violent images, pornography, or profanity. Please don't use animated avatars (GIF) as some people have issues with moving/flashing images.
Avatars that are found to be inappropriate will be removed at the discretion of the staff.
Signatures
Only one image per signature. Images in signatures must also be no larger than 250 pixels wide X 125 pixels high. If you have more than one image you will be requested to remove one. If this is not done in a timely manner the staff has the right to modify your signature to abide by these rules.
You are allowed 1 link in your signature and 3 lines of text. Links pointing at hacking, freaking, illegal, pornographic or similar sites will be removed when reported or observed. If you run a site that is astronomy or astrophotography related these are allowed to be posted. Be aware that they are no-follow, so you get no SEO gain from them.

Classifieds

Our site offers a Classifieds area. All trades, sales and purchases through the Classifieds area is at the risk of the participant. Astro What makes no guarantee of the quality of the items listed. Caveat Emptor is the rule of the day. It is the purchasers duty to perform due diligence, up to asking for any supporting images/documentation from the seller pertaining to the item being sold. Astro What does simply provides a channel for connections between buyers and sellers.
It is the responsibility of the buyer and the purchaser to work out payment arrangements. We DO recommend making payments by a secured method that will cover for bad sellers (like PayPal Business transactions and not Friends & Family), but the payment process is ultimately between the buyer and seller.
Abuse of the service by either shipping an item that is damaged when claiming it is in good shape or any other fraud will result in a BAN being put into place on the actor. We will do ALL possible to help any that are taken advantage of, including providing email address of abusers, IP addresses used and any other necessary data to assist in pursuing abusers of the Classifieds on the site.
To create an add, you must make a minimum of 15 posts in the main areas and have been a member for 30 days or more. Posting trash posts will result in a removal of that ability until manually requested later... which may (or may not) be granted.

Resource Area

The Resources provided here are all supplied by users. Those that are paid resources link to the resource owner/seller or to a store providing the resource for sale. Some free resources will also link to an outside website that will allow you to download it. Astro What? assumes no liability to the use or the quality of resources linked from this site.

Link Directory

We provide an area so that users can enter links to vendors, dark sky sites, campsites and more. These entries should ONLY be related to astronomy/astrophotography. Abuse of this feature will result in your ability to participate (entering OR viewing) being removed from your account.

BANS

Admins have the right to ban members. We don't do that lightly, and you will probably be warned about your behavior if you are under consideration for a ban. Bans can be for a short term or indefinite. In either case your IP is kept in the database for control/checking aspects for ban enforcement.
However, if you are a spammer, troll, racist or in some other way obviously unsuited to the forum, a summary ban will be applied. These type bans are permanent and non-negotiable. Returning banned members will be re-banned. When posting you agree that the administrators and the moderators of this forum has the right to modify, delete, edit or close any topic, signature, account, or profile data at any time that they see fit. If you have any questions concerning this, please do not start a new thread, but rather private message to an administrator or moderator.

Conversations (also known as direct messages)

Conversations between users CAN be reviewed by admin and staff. We do not make a habit of reviewing users conversations, but if they are reported and contain rule violations of the site, we will take action against the writer. Basically, consider the conversations as being the same as a public post, just direct between the participants. Don't post anything that violates our terms of service.
