What you can see with a simple low cost pair of binoculars. I'd strongly recommend anyone interested in astronomy to have at least one pair of decent 10x50 binoculars and one pair of smaller portable ones on hand at all times.

They are great for when you are first learning the sky, but they will also give ample ability to view the moon and the planets (though not as well as a telescope). They also will assist in learning the layout of the stars as your field of view is typically larger and you can see where your target star is in relationship to the other stars.

I keep a pair of Bushnell compacts in the travel trailer for us to use anytime we are camping or to show any kids the moon and planetsthat are out and about around us.

With a quality pair of binoculars, it is REALLY amazing what you can observe if you have even decent dark skies.
