My first real exposure to amateur astronomy was from a friend that was "really" into it... so much so that he built his own Dobsonian from scratch (other than the mirrors and such).
Was a really surprising experience as he had a 12" Dobsonian that was really great for DSO objects when viewing live.
Of course, this was about 3 decades ago... when I think more people were into it this way than they are now where it's a simple "Well, I got XXXX dollars to spend, what telescope do I want".
Anyone else actually build a scope from a kit or from scratch?
