This site makes HEAVY use of prefixes for various areas. This allows to us to minimize the number of topic areas downward. It further allows our users to filter based upon the specific prefixes. In some areas you may be required to use a prefix.. in others, a default one is assigned. We do ask that you utilize the prefix system as there are strong benefits to it.

If you go to post in an area, and you don't see similar to this

then it means that prefixes are not used in that area. If you see the above or even a default one, prefixes are in use for that area.

As an example of this, if you wanted to see ONLY posts that are related to a Celestron telescope in the Telescope area, you could either use the filter selector on the upper right of the screen above the area and select your prefix (and even finer filtering available).

The other option is if you are in the area listing all the topics, you can simply click on the prefix you are interested in and the system will automatically filter out anything other than that prefix for you.

A perfect example of the use of the prefixes is the Telescope area.
Instead of having to have separate areas for the different types of telescopes or major manufacturers...we have enabled the prefix system.

So, instead of having to have a different area for each one of them... they are all in one area and subject to being filtered for specificity. In the case of this area, all the ones with a telescope by them is a manufacturer of telescopes (some of the major). More possibly will be added later.

This is somewhat different than many other sites do.. but it also makes it so it is easier to filter other stuff out without having to go to multiple forum nodes, and it also makes it so that the user may even find something of interest in a combined area that they may not normally have pursued, since with the topics split they may not go into that one area.
