Wanting to get involved with watching the skies and also in astronomy as a whole can happen to some people of a young age and for others, it could be something they find an interest in as they get a little older.

No matter what the age, most are going to want recommendations of the kind of telescope to get as a beginner.

As someone who has been sky-watching and also been an astronomer for a long time, which telescope would you recommend for someone new?

A good Dobsonian. You can't really do astrophotography with it, but for live viewing, they are a light bucket. And that way, you learn the heavens and actually see stuff.
Avoid like the plague the $50-$175 department store style telescopes... ALL they will do is become frustrated because many of them have cheap mirrors that do not show the sky well.
